Museum Framing Materials, Gamma ImagingGamma's archival rag mat board selection comes in hundreds of colors, textures, and appearances. From an aesthetics point of view, picture matting provides several design qualities which enhance artwork. Functionally, they serve as a spacer to protect art or photographes from direct contact with glass.

Museum Quality Picture Matting Gamma

Whereas many shops provide picture matting from a variety of materials, namely paper, cardboard, fibrous materials made from wood pulp, and some more oriented toward conservation use products which are lignin free, sulfur-free, alkaline pulped, alkaline reserve, Gamma uses only Bainbridge's Alphamats, which ensures preservation for generations. These museum-grade mats, available in 4 ply & 8 ply, incorporate a patented conservation product called Artcare.

Hinges, Chicago Picture Framing The methods used to secure a painting or document in the mat are critical. Gamma uses two conservation approaches, each equally sound for true museum framing.

Learn More...Both custom framing techniques allow air to circulate around the artwork and also ensure that the mounting process is completely reversible if in the future the art needs to be reframed.

1. Lon-fibered Japanese rice paper hinges are ued to attach a work of art to its backmat. These hinges are attached to the reverse of the work with a cooked, highly purified wheat starch paste. They secure the top edge of the work to the mat, while still allowing the paper to expand and contract freely in response to the changes in its environment.

2. An archivally sound alternative secures the art in the mat with photocorners, triangular sleeves of inert, acid free plastic film placed over the object's corners and adhered to the backmat.
No adhesive is applied to the art when using photocorners, facilitating its removal from the backmat, if necessary.

Custom Picture Framing at Gamma Imaging

Glazing Materials, Custom Picture Framing at Gamma Gamma's museum quality picture framing is formulated to protect framed works of art from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light. Using True Vue Conservation Series glass and Cyro scratch-resistant grades of acrylic, our glazing protects the surface of the work of art and prevents the infiltration of dirt and dust.

Learn More... Gamma selects True Vue's 2.5mm thick Conservation Series clear and non-glare glass because these products are given the most rigorous testing and have set the standard for quality in the custom picture framing industry for over 20 years. True Vue's glass is coated with a microscopic, silica based layer of UV blocking agents which are cured onto the surface of the glass. The coating and the glass it is applied to will remain clear and protect artwork from 98% of the most damaging UV light rays, those in the 300-380 nanometer range.

In many instances, Gamma recommends the use of acrylic. Acrylic weights half as much as glass and is more impact resistant, making it better suited for shipping, display in high traffic areas, or where children are playing.

Gamma's 3mm Cyro acrylic is optimally pure and free from defects. Cyro OP-3 is conservation arcylic which offers 98% UV filtering, providing artwork the best defense against paper embrittlement, color deterioration and loss of brightness.

Conservation Backing Materials
Backmat/BackingBoard Depending on the original artwork, Gamma's picture frames use either Japanese hinges or acid-free corners as the primary means of attaching art to Artcare's alpha-cellulose 4-ply backmat. Through zoolite technology, Artcare's backmat actively protects art from aging and fading. Microscopic molecular traps built in this 100% archival board lock up molecules of pollutants and gases, keeping them from damaging the artwork.

Learn More... Additionally, Artmark's backing board protects artwork from pollutants entering the back of the framed piece and from by-products within the frame. Because of their use of buffers, manufacturers of other acid free backing board claim their to be archival, but in fact they offer no protection against the damaging effects of outgassing. Simply put, Gamma's custom picture framing techniques offer the highest level of archival protection available.

Additionally, to minimize the effects of pollutants and changes in relative humidity, Gamma's custom framing places a layer of mylar Type D impermeable material between the backmat and the backing board. The picture frame is then sealed with Artcare's dust cover, 1 ply chemically stable paper on the back to protect it from dust, air, moisture and insects.
