Artist's Statement
Bethany Gola began her art training at a young age and had her first commission before she was able to drive herself to the "job site". Though quite passionate about art it was also her love for the human body and its spirit that tore her in two when it came time to decide, "what do you want to be when you grow up". Deciding to pursue Medical Illustration she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Madison where she was to double major in art and zoology.
It was after many life science courses including chemistry, biology, physiology, and anatomy that she found herself wanting to draw things that couldn't be seen in or around the body but that were certainly there. Heat in the skin, energy of the muscle, beauty of the fascia. It was also that time where she had the opportunity to draw from the live model and truly discover the many layers of the body both seen and unseen.
Not quite considering this a career, she put her figures on the side as her escape and changed majors to a B.F.A. in Art/Design with a minor in Business. She began working as an independent designer out of college. Her focus was on art that would be used in daily life: book illustration and design; web design; murals, and paintings for the home; home decor pieces including tile trivets, coasters, and prints from her whimsical watercolor designs.
